hi folks, Just a quick question..... when do you know if your snake is ready to go up a mouse size, from pinkies to the next stage?

The general rule is to feed a mouse no bigger then 1.5 times the size of the thickest part of the snakes body. If when you feed your snake there is none or very little of a bulge then its time to up the size of mouse.

It is really needs tp be your personal judgement but once the snake is managing a meal without difficulty I double up on the food item for a while and then switch to the next size.

also, I was wondering about when you start teaching the snake to strike, at the moment I place the mouse on a bit of paper and he slithers up and eats it, but the guy in the shop mentioned using tongs or something to hold the mouse so you can train it to strike at it. ??

Snakes don't need training some will strick some won't. And it is your desicion wether you let the snake tong feed or not. I tong feed my younger corn and my boa but my older one won't strick. If the snake will take non moving prey then you can keep them doing that for the rest of their lifes.
At this stange a cheap pair of plastic tongs will do fine but I would suggest if you are going to feed like that then spending a fiver on a 30" set isn't a bad idea. They will last the snakes entire life and won't break as easily. You also get a much better grip on the food item.
