Hi CC! I heard that there were some laws in Canada, well, Ontario anyway, which prevents you from keeping snakes over a stupidely small length. How easy is it to get corns over there? Is that law enforced? Do you need a license to keep them?

Hi Brigadoon. No, I've found no laws in Manitoba stating any restrictions on ownership of any anphibian or reptile - only the selling from wild is regulated. We just had an expo (as I've said earlier) and they had everything from corns, milk snakes, pythons, boas to bearded dragons, salamanders, spiders and scorpions - all for sale. One person had an albino boa around their neck (yellow and beautiful, but too big for me). There also is no licensing requirements, except again, if you are selling them. There are several 'exotic' stores throughout my city that sell corns, but usually their supply is quite small and definitely more expensive than buying from a breeder (double the cost, actually). So in answer to your question, it's quite easy to get a corn snake here, but if you're selective on the morph, you have to special order through the store or direct through a breeder. Actually as I'm typing this I'm recalling someone telling me about garden snake pits out in the rural areas of Manitoba too. Although I haven't seen them, they're supposed to be a tourist attraction of sorts. I've heard about Ontario and having by-laws about keeping snakes, but I think that's just in the certain cities - I'll have to check with the breeder my hubby just bought his anery from since she is from Ontario and they've been breeding corns for the last 3 years. I'll let you know what I find out. How easy is it for you to obtain and care for you corn in the UK?? Judging from the popularity and comments on the sites I've seen, it seems to be an affordable and legal pet?

Thanks CC! Yeah, it's very easy to get corns and supplies here, there's a lot of reptile shops around me, although getting it direct from the breeder is about half price here too. And some shops are questionable in their practices.... I once went into a place not too far, the hatchlings were in small boxes (normal so far) but the paper in there hadn't been changed in a while, it was brown with faeces.... Most places are alright though and tend to offer good friendly advice. There's lots of online shops as well for supplies, including food, although I prefer to go out and get them, at least I'll be sure they're still frozen when they get to my house.
There are no laws (yet anyway) against keeping corns or other reptiles. There might be some to keep venimous snakes though, again I'm not sure.
